Chesham 3rd XI beat Boyne Hill

Saturday was yet another warm afternoon. The wicket looked dry and would probably be a result wicket but we know from experience that it is really a par 225 wicket. Boyne Hill, confident from a comprehensive ten wicket home win against Chesham at the start of the season. The BH captain won the toss and elected to bat. Both teams supplied qualified umpires, second week running and without repeating myself it does improve the game massively, thank you gentlemen.

Chesham opened up with the in-form Tanvir Butt and Martin Wheeler's slow left arm as balance. Very tight bowling, good fielding cutting off runs from the bad ball, and excellent catching behind the wicket put BH into some trouble. 19 - 3 off 11 overs meant the Chesham fielding effort was well on top. Butt was replaced by Umar Aslam, Wheeler (who bowled his first 16 over's for 24, 9 maidens) kept one end tight. Umar didn't release the pressure and bowled a tight spell until a late drinks break (2-2-11-0). Chris Royals took over, Wheeler (21-8-46-1)still "wheeling" away at the other end, Chris kept the pressure on bowling 3 maidens on the trot. Wickets started to fall, good shots going for 0, Khurram Ahmed making three or four great stops and Chesham's catching was good. Only a near collision between Royals C and Ahmed giving the BH batters a break. Wickets started to fall (Royals 11-3-21-3) and the return of Butt (12.4-2-42-6) helped hasten the end of the BH innings for a below par 132 all out. All the bowlers did well but what is most impressive is the fielding effort which does really help win matches!

A good tea again by Mrs R was followed by a testing spell of bowling from the BH openers. The impressive Roberts the pick of the BH bowlers (he got 8 wickets against us first time around!). Butt had a life and then Roberts made the break through getting the ball to bounce and leave Saunders having him caught behind an exact repeat of his dismissal 9 weeks ago at the first battle of the Boyne. Matt Watson replaced Saunders but found the going very tough indeed. Butt batted very sensibly and Chesham knew they were in a game. Watson fell LBW going back and across to a straight one and young Tom Fouhy joined Butt with the game very much in a the balance and 100 needed to win. Fouhy and Butt played well, good running between the wickets releasing pressure and the bad ball dispatched for 4 more often than not. Fouhy (ending 50 NO) and Butt (70 NO) saw Chesham home to another impressive run chase win by 8 wickets.

Chesham Overwhelm MCC

Chesham Cricket Club’s 1^st XI beat an MCC select XI by 6 wickets in comfortable fashion on Wednesday. The MCC captain won the toss and, as expected, decided to bat first in the 40 overs per side game. They got off to a good start with both opening batsman coping well with good opening spells from Peter Ongondo and Tom Turner. Chesham soon introduced their spinners and it was only then that they began to make inroads into the MCC batting line up, Andy Goddard broke the opening partnership by removing Shuttle for 44 and Mo Asuaf followed his lead by removing Fleming for 54. Chesham then started to dominate the game, the spinners were proving hard to score off with Goddard taking regular wickets from one end. Goddard ended with 5 wickets and conceded only 25 runs from his allocated overs and together with Umar Aslam, who ended with 2 wickets, oversaw a remarkable batting collapse seeing the MCC lose their last 8 wickets for only 7 runs. The collapse meant that the MCC ended with only 153, this looked well below par on a very flat pitch. Chesham started solidly, with openers Garry Emery and Matt Rance surviving the first 8 overs until Rance was well caught in the slips for 17. Chris Munoz was out LBW next ball and when Emery was out soon after, Chesham were struggling slightly on 55-3.However, Jason Rance and Andy Goddard started to build a partnership and pushed Chesham on beyond 100. Rance was bowled for a well made 40 but Goddard, with support from captain Ollie Turner, saw the team home finishing with 56 not out. Chesham reached their target within 29 overs, it was a convincing win which included a fantastic all round performance from man of the match Andy Goddard.

Sunday 2nds Claim First Win

The Sunday 2nds got their first win of the season in a thriller against Northwood Town. Having lost the toss, Chesham were put into field, and the Northwood openers came out playing extravagant shots, hitting one six which smashed a local resident's greenhouse. However, two overs later, a beautiful inswinging yorker from Ben Sergeant removed one batter, while accurate bowling from K Prasanth from the other end yielded him two well earned wickets, and he finished his 10 overs with figures of 2-29. With Northwood seeming to be in trouble, Guy Fowler piled on the pressure, bowling his 6 overs for just 7 runs, but O'Neil and the Northwood captain Hills stayed in, before starting to accelerate, putting on a 100 partnership before it was broken as Hills was out for 49 after some tight bowling from Charlie Wood. O'Neil was removed by Chris Royals a few overs later for a well earned 64, and Royals and Rod Dowle kept the run rate down in the final overs, restricting Northwood to 191-5 off their 45 overs.
Though this seemed a not outrageous total to chase, Chesham got off to a disastrous start, losing John Royals (14), Mark Hughes-D'aeth (5), Matt Watson (0) and Ben Sergeant (0) early, leaving Chesham on 23-4. However, Laksman Nagarajan and Chris Royals recovered the innings, putting on a partnership of 111, before Chris Royals was caught and bowled for 47, with the score on 134. In the next over, Laksman was stumped for 58, leaving the Chesham lower order with plenty of work to do to win the game on a tough wicket with accurate bowling from both ends. Alex Watson led the way, smashing 26 at well over a run a ball, before playing on, with 30 runs still required with 5 overs to go and 2 wickets left. Charlie Wood and K Prasanth pushed the ball around well, scoring quickly and sensibly, before Prasanth was bowled with 7 runs still to get. After scrambling through for a couple of singles, Chesham were left needing 5 to win off the last over, with 1 wicket in hand. The Northwood bowling was tight, as they crowded the bat, before Rod Dowle smashed the ball through the covers for four bringing the scores level. The next ball, he repeated the shot, leaving Chesham victorious by 1 wicket with one ball to spare, in large thanks to Charlie Wood's sensible innings of 14 not out in the last few overs. This was a vital win for Chesham in a bottom of the table clash, which will go some way towards keeping the young side in the same division next year.

Rance Dominates With Bat & Ball as Chesham Top League

Chesham’s Sunday 1^st XI kept up their 100% record this season with an excellent win against Cockfosters. Captain Ollie Turner once again lost the toss and Chesham were asked to field first on a flat pitch. Peter Ongondo once again bowled a tight opening spell but runs began to leak at the other end with Cockfosters’ opening batsman T Sayers playing aggressively, only when Chris Munoz dismissed the dangerous Sayers for a quick fire 46 did Chesham begin to exert some control on the game. Fergus Hardy replaced Ongondo and bowled excellently in tandem with leg-spinner Andy Goddard. Runs were proving hard to comeby and thanks to some excellent fielding, the pressure continued to increase on the batsman resulting in a wicket for Hardy and the vital run-out of O’Leary for a well made 51. Hardy finished his spell conceding only 31 runs and taking 1 wicket in his 10 overs. He was replaced by Matt Rance and wickets began to tumble with only Elder being able to offer any significant resistance. He was removed by Rance for 52 but, thanks to a late cameo from J.Stead, Cockfosters reached 223-9 in their allocated 45 overs with Matt Rance finishing with 4 wickets in his 6 overs. Chesham’s reply began poorly with opener Garry Emery removed in the first over but, thanks to some slightly wayward bowling, Matt Rance and Barney Atkins were able to push the score on past 50. Atkins, however, top edged a pull to fine leg and when Goddard was dismissed soon after Chesham were struggling and needed a partnership. Jason Rance joined his brother Matt at the crease and signalled his intent by smashing his first ball for four through the covers. Their partnership began to build and as both batsman passed 50, Chesham began to look more confortable in their pursuit of the target. Jason, however, was bowled by the impressive Barker for 50 but Matt was looking increasingly comfortable at the crease. A couple of wickets soon followed as only Chris Munoz (16) and Tom Turner (17) were able to support Rance in the middle. It was left to Fergus Hardy to keep a cool head and help Rance see Chesham across the line in the 44^th over. The only disappointment was that Rance finished on 99*, 1 run short of a well deserved century. It was an excellent win for Chesham as they go clear at the top of the league and continue their 100% record in Chess Valley League division 2.

Chesham vs The MCC

Chesham's 1st XI will be playing host to an MCC select XI on Wednesday 21st July. It's a traditional fixture for the club and is often an excellent game. The game starts at 2pm and will last until well into the evening. The bar will be open and spectators are more than welcome.

Four teams at Stowe

13-12-2008

Chesham finish a quite remarkable BCB league season with four teams representing the club at the Stowe finals on Sunday 18th July.

The U15A, U14A, U13A and U10A play in the finals of their respective age group league cup at Stowe School having defeated North Bucks clubs in the semis. This is a record for the club.

In the U12 league the U12A team narrowly failed to qualify for the semis on net run rate and the U11A finished a creditable third in their league

2010 for the women and Girls so far!

U13 Lady Taverner's Tournament

A team representing Chesham took part in this tournament on Sunday 20th June at Aylesbury. There were 8 teams taking part and Chesham came third behind the teams from Buckingham and Great Kingshill. This was a fine achievement as some of the girls were new to cricket this summer and several were U11. The team was Charlotte Anderson, Chioma Atuanya, Libby Ayling, Lucy Cross, Isobel Grint, Anna Harris, Lisa Hughes-D'Aeth with a little help from their friends Imogen Deighton and Imogen Fitzpatrick. Well done girls!

U15 Lady Taverners Competition

This was a smaller event with only three teams entered. Marlow took on Buckingham in the first round with the winner to challenge the holders, Chesham, for the cup. Marlow beat Buckingham to become the challengers. A very close match followed with Chesham coming out victorious and retaining the cup. Well done to the team - Kathleen Benmore, Sarah Coady, Anna Harris, Wishi Hiddalarchchi, Anna Nicholls, Hannah Sandy and Laura Sandy. They will now go on to represent Bucks in the regional round on 10th August.

Chesham Women in the League

Chesham Women have played three league matches and lost one to rain. We beat Letchworth, but lost to Kempston and, in a very close match, to New Bradwell. Due to some fine batting and bowling performances, earning good bonus points, we are currently in third place in the league. Top scores have been made by Lorna Browne (62), Claire Barrett-Mold (56) and Sue Benson (32 and 29). Our top wicket takers are Elspeth Fowler (5) and Harriet Stone (4). We have quite a bit of travelling to do in the coming weeks as we have mostly had home fixtures so far.

Chesham Women - 6-a-side tounament

A team entered the Great Horwood 6-a-side tournament last Sunday. They played four matches, winning three of them to earn themselves a place in the final to play Kempston. This was very close and had spectators guessing right until the very last ball was bowled, but unfortunately they brought home the runners up awards! On a very hot day the girls were exhausted after all the sharp running between the wickets and the chasing of balls in the field - well done to the team - Claire Barrett-Mold, Sue Benson, Lorna Browne, Elspeth Fowler, Susie Gillot, Yolanda Harris and Kim Tyrell. We have improved our performance in this event over the three years we have participated - do the same next year and we bring back the trophy!

I hope that you have enjoyed being part of all that has been going on since early May. We continue training on a Monday throughout the school summer holidays and have some games sessions planned as well as the skills practices - should be fun, make sure you are there whenever you can be!

Goddard's Hundred Guides Sunday 1st XI To Another Win

Chesham’s Sunday 1^st XI continued their 100% record with an excellent win against Abbots Langley. Abbots’ captain won the toss and chose to make first use of an excellent pitch and the lightening fast outfield. Tom Turner and Peter Ongondo took the new ball for Chesham and soon made inroads into the batting lineup, Ongondo was bowling an excellent aggressive spell but it was Turner who took the first two wickets. Both were catches for Henry White, one was an excellent outswinging delivery while the other was slightly fortunately edged behind down the leg side. The early wickets brought Abbots’ overseas star Mitchell Inglis to the crease, he soon got into his stride mixing aggressive strokeplay with solid defence. Wickets, however, continued to tumble at the other end with Ongondo taking one and change bowler Jason Rance taking the other. It was only Abbots’ captain Dave Carlisle who was able to offer any Support to Inglis, he made 34 in a partnership which saw Inglis pass his hundred. When Carlisle was run out by Barney Atkins, Chesham began to regain some control of the game with Inglis beginning to tire and Tom Helm bowling an excellent spell. Inglis was eventually dismissed by the impressive Helm for a fantastic 162 and Abbots’ ended their 45 over with a score of 255. This looked about par on a good pitch on a ground with a fast outfield. Chesham’s strong batting line up started the run chase confidently with openers Matt Rance and Barney Atkins both playing well. Chesham then lost 3 quick wickets, including both openers, which brought Andy Goddard and Jason Rance together at the crease. They began to build an excellent partnership by both rotating the strike and hitting regular boundaries. Both batsman passed 50 and Chesham continued to keep up with the required run rate. Rance was eventually stumped for 58 and, although Tom Helm followed him back to the pavilion soon after and Pete Ongondo was excellently caught going for a huge 6, Goddard continued to run well and hit a boundary when required. Goddard reached his hundred in the penultimate over leaving Tom Turner to hit a four with 4 balls to spare to seal the victory. Goddard finished with 107 not out, a fantastic innings which together with Jason Rance’s 58 guided Chesham to an excellent win leaving them top of Chess Valley League division 2.

Is this a record?

Chesham Cricket Club hosted their annual 6 -a-side tournament on Sunday where 16 teams from 9 different clubs competed for 4 different competitions. Chenies & Latimer won the main competition with Chesham Cubs (next years Lions) beating this years Chesham Lions in the plate final. Great Kingshill beat Wycombe in the shield final and Chesham Panthers winning the bowl. Over 100 children played during the tournament at Chesham but this Sunday could have set some sort of record for the club. Along with the 30 Chesham boys who played in the tournament at Chesham, 14 went to Winchmore Hill to compete in their U10 tournament, 11 senior women at Kempston, 22 senior men at Ley Hill and Abbots Langley, 11 in the Rising Stars first team at Arisen CC in Woking, 11 more in the second team at Crescent CC in Woking, and 11 under 13s at Chalfont St Peter meant 110 different people represented the club at various places on Sunday. Quite a testament for a community focussed local cricket club!!

Cricket Legend at Chesham

One of cricket's all-time greats, South Africa's Barry Richards, was guest of honour at Chesham Cricket Club's Player of the Month Awards, sponsored by Chesham Insurance Brokers.
Richards presented the awards to Matt Rance (1st XI), Mohammed Asauf (2nd XI), Tanvir Butt (3rd XI), and Mark Hughes D'aeth (4th XI), and spent the evening discussing many aspects of cricket with club members.
This was Richards' first visit back to Chesham since he played at The Meadow for Hampshire against Buckinghamshire in May 1970 - a match in which he scored 69 runs and took the final wicket of the game to wrap up Hampshire's victory. Chesham CC presented Richards with a framed copy of the scorecard of that game as a memento of his visit.
Club Chairman Jonathan Royals was delighted, "It's fantastic to have a cricketer of Barry's stature here at Chesham Cricket Club. He has been chatting all evening with all the members, passing on batting tips, swapping cricketing stories, and discussing some of the current issues within the game - Barry just loves grass-roots cricket. It's been a great evening for the Club and the members."
Barry Richards commented how much he had enjoyed the evening and thanked the members for their friendliness and hospitality, and hoped to return again soon.

Sunday 1sts Start With Convincing Win

After their promotion last season, the Chesham Sunday 1^st XI started with an excellent victory away against St.Albans. Having managed to scrape together a makeshift eleven, captain Ollie Turner’s first job of the afternoon was the toss which he lost and Chesham were asked to field first. Overseas star Peter Ongondo took the new ball and along with Garry Emery made early inroads into the St Albans batting line up taking one wicket apiece to remove both openers. Runs, however, soon began to flow thanks largely to Howeson who took advantage of some slightly wayward bowling from Emery. Things soon changed when spinners Fergus Hardy and Andy Goddard were introduced into the attack, both bowled with excellent control making run scoring very difficult and wickets began to tumble at both ends. When they had reached the end of their spells, St Albans had collapsed to 90-9 with Hardy taking 4 wickets and Goddard finishing with 3 wickets. Chesham soon took the final wicket and St.Albans had been bowled out for just 92. In reply, openers Garry Emery and Lakshman Nagarajan got Chesham off to a good start putting on 30 for the first wicket before Nagarajan edged behind for 12 and Emery was well stumped after making 19. This brought Ollie Turner and Andy Goddard to the crease, they started to build a good partnership and Chesham reached the target of 93 without the loss of another wicket with Goddard finishing 25 not out and Turner reaching 34 not out. It was an excellent victory for newly promoted Chesham especially bearing in mind that they were missing more than half of their regular team.

Pavilion Update

Chesham C.C Pavilion Redevelopment Committee

These minutes relate to two meetings involving some members of the main and three sub-committees being set up to promote the redevelopment of the pavilion.Those meetings took place at :-

-the clubhouse on 09-05-10 and was attended by Jon Royals (J.R ),Mike Price

( M.P ) Brendan O,Donovan ( B.D ) and Rod Dowle ( R.D )

-at R.D,s house on 17-05-10 and was attended by Jon Royals,Alistair Thomas

( A.T )-developer- and Rod Dowle.

A number of courses of action were agreed.

Action

1. J.R advised that he was hopeful of persuading James Skelton,F.D of B&Q

to join the main board of the redevelopment company.

2. B.D agreed to head the Grants sub-committee and to organize membership.

There would be a considerable number of bespoke applications required. B.D

R.D advised that Tim Wainwright had agreed to be a member of this

committee to assist.R.D has also put himself forward for membership.

3. J.R reported that he and R.D had recently met with the ECB,at their invitation

to see whether they could assist with the funding of the changing rooms in

the new pavilion.Their grant focus over the next year was support for womens

cricket and they were aware of the considerable strides Chesham C.C were

. making on this front.

4. J.R is to complete assembly of the main board membership.R.D said he would

speak to a close contact of his,Trevor Ivory,an Associate at Eversheds,to see

if he would be prepared to assist upon legal matters. J.R

J.R said he would want to sit on every committee. R.D

5. R.D is to finalize membership of the Property Committee.J.R said that

Harriet Smith,a cost consultant known to both J.R and R.D,might be R.D

prepared to join one or other of the committees.J.R is to pursue J.R

6. J.R said he thought the fund raising efforts should be handled by two committees.The first,already in being,would be focusing on major fund raising projects and be assisted by a professional promotional firm.

The second committee needed to be set up to handle more local,club initiatives.

J.R is looking for a Chairman to head this committee and up to six other

individuals to assist.Would anyone interested let J.R know direct.It was noted

that grant organizations to whom we apply would see this self help committee

as an important test of membership commitment so its role in securing funds is

doubly significant.

7 A.T provided advice upon the process of drawing up final,detailed plans for

the pavilion,based upon his experience of handling the pavilion development

proposals for North Oxford C.C.

He said it was crucial that:-

-the designs for/scale of the kitchen were vetted by a specialist kitchen

provider to ensure that it was large enough and properly configured

to meet the maximum calls for dinners,food,snacks etc.

-the design for/scale of the cellarage were vetted by a brewer to ensure

that it was large enough and properly configured to meet the maximum

calls for beer and drink storage.

-he reiterated a concern already identified by J.R and R.D that the number

and location of the toilets would comfortably accommodate the peak

demand for facilities.Any shortfall would be catastrophic to our ability

to use/hire out the premises for functions.

Jerry Fisher is to orchestrate the above checks. J.F

8. R.D said that the club had received detailed specifications relating to changing

rooms,showers and toilets from the E.C.B including the needs of the disabled.

This material had been forwarded to Jerry Fisher for him to draw into his pavilion

design.

9. J.R is to speak to Jerry Fisher about tweaks to the original design so as to provide a large first floor veranda and a patio beneath in front of the bar JR

10. A.T suggested that Jerry Fisher be asked to produce a detailed draft of the

pavilion design for consideration by the main board and property committees.

11. R.D has sent A.T a copy of the original pavilion design and the appeal decision.

12. J.R said his broad strategy anticipated raising the £900,000 build costs by:-

- ECB,Sport England grants etc £500,000

- External fund raising £300,000

- Club functions,members etc £125,000

- Possible franchises for bar and catering

Chesham win 6-a-Side

13-12-2008

Chesham U14s enjoyed a successful afternoon when they won the inagural Ibstone Cricket Club 6-a-side tournament. The team remained unbeaten throughout the day beating teams from Ibstone, Ley Hill and Wycombe on the way to the final. The final itself saw Chesham post a daunting 75 from their 5 overs against Ley Hill with Ben Woodward, Ben Marote and James White posting individual scores in excess of 20. Callum Hollins, Edward and Charles Turner made up the succesful sextet. The team was captained by Ben Woodward who was kept busy at the presentations by having to pick up the main cup and then return to pick up the player of the tournament award.

Summer….at last!

The sun and summer finally seem to have arrived and we hope that this means more enjoyable (warm!) training sessions and matches to come. Hopefully, all the umpires, scorers and supporters have avoided frostbite and we look forward to seeing everyone over the coming weeks.

Some early season highlights include the Under 12As starting with 3 wins, firstly against the County U11 side, followed by wins in the Bucks League v Gt Kingshill and High Wycombe. Well done boys and keep up the good work. Some great performances have also been seen in wins for the U11A side v High Wycombe in their first match and the U10A team v Dinton. The Under 14A & B teams both top their leagues to date.

High scores have been a feature of games at the Meadow, testament to the good quality wickets, such as the games involving the U14s who lost to High Wycombe after setting 17 5. Other matches have regularly featured scores over 150 in 20 overs. Maybe some of our bowlers need to speak to Peter...see below

Seniors

The First Eleven have won two of their first three legaue game s, whilst the 2nds have won their first t hree league games. Notable performances from our Junior players, including 63 for Matt Rance in the 1s v Sonning, 79 by Gary Emery and 54* by Tom Turner in the 2s win at Stoke Green and an impressive 95 for Alex Morgan. T he not so junior Mo Asuaf has scored 94 & 70 in the win s over Ruislip & Princes Risborough whilst Brendon O’Donovan scored 74 v Kidmore End and the evergreen Tim Wainwright scored 68 for the 4s v Windsor.

The 3rds have won one league game whilst the 4ths have not yet forced a win but competed well in all games. Due to two cancellations the women have only played one game which they lost, but play against Letchworth on 30 May. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to our President Rod Dowle, who was taken ill playing last week. We hope he is up & back playing soon.

Peter Ongondo

You may have seen Peter around the ground this year, and helping with training. He will be around all summer.

Any aspiring young fast bowlers who have not met or seen Peter Ongondo bowl then do please try to get to see him one Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when the 1st eleven are at home. He is a genuinely fast bowler and a role model for any bowler. Please introduce yourself, he is happy to chat to anyone and to try and help them improve their game.

Junior Training

Whilst we know that everyone has many commitments, please remember training sessions starts at 6-30pm. It can be difficult for coaches to structure sessions, and unfair for players, when an influx of players arrives late.

Fixtures are fully available on the website, but may be subject to change. Please advise Steve Paul or Graham if you have not heard regarding team selection.

World Cup Prediction Quiz

Yes I know we are a cricket club but we are running a prediction quiz on the results of the Group games in the World Cup.

Ground Facilities

You will have seen that we have had to undertake major overhaul of the nets at the Ground at a considerable expense this year. Please respect these facilities which have been provided thanks to assistance from a few generous donations as well as your subscriptions. Any one found misusing the nets will be asked to leave and consideration given to cancelling their membership.

Annual Subscriptions / Shirts

Anyone who has not paid their subs yet, please do so. Match selection and training is only provided to full members and it does mean that we won’t have to ask you not to attend sessions or matches.

Please let us know if you have not yet received shirts. Our suppliers have had a number of problems with orders from Stuart Surridge. Sorry, we hope to have this resolved by the end of the month and Ollie does have some shirts available if you see him at training sessions.

New Kit 2010! UPDATE

In terms of the playing shirts, all sizes apart from Large Boys and Small are now available to those aged U10 and above who have paid subs and haven't received their shirt. Please approach Ollie at the club if you haven't had your shirt yet. The large boys size is an issue with the kit maker 'Surridge', they ran out but have estimated we may have the shirts by the end of next week but we can't promise anything. The same applies for the size Small.

There are also a number of you who have ordered training kit. If you have ordered it from me then the order has been placed with the supplier and we'll get the kit to you as soon as we get it. There are one or two issues here with the Large Hoodies and the Medium Training Shirts but we're doing our best and it shouldn't be too long before we get that kit to you as well.
