Cricket club targeted by arsonists secures Olympic legacy boost from Sport England

Chesham Cricket Club has secured £50,000 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund to help replace a clubhouse burned down by arsonists.

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.

The National Lottery funding will help the club to build a new pavilion after their old clubhouse was burned down in an arson attack in April 2011. The cricket club has teamed up with Chiltern Harriers Running Club in their plans for a new facility at the Meadow.

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This investment will create will be a fantastic sporting legacy for Chesham. This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in Buckinghamshire. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”

Chesham CC chairman Jonathan Royals said, “We are thrilled to secure this grant, which will enable us to make a start on this exciting project. We see ourselves very much as part of the wider community, and this grant will allow us to develop our facilities and other community activities within a welcoming and safe environment. In these austere times, we’re still striving hard to raise the money that will allow us to rebuild what was taken from us in an act of mindless vandalism. I would like to think that one day, perhaps, inspired by the project we are about to embark upon, a young cricketer from Chesham might walk out at Lord’s to represent England."

The project is one of 350 local community sports groups who have been offered a total of £17.4 million in Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund.

The investments will breathe new life into tired facilities that can be unattractive to sports participants, difficult to maintain and run. Grants have also been offered to convert existing buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport and to allow local clubs to buy the facilities they use.

Inspired Facilities has been designed to be as simple and accessible as possible for potential applicants, with a shorter form and a catalogue of ready-made options to choose from. This is the first of five funding rounds of Inspired Facilities; the second round opens on 1 February 2012, offering hundreds more local groups the chance to bid for a further £10 million of funding.

Places People Play is being delivered by Sport England. We are working in partnership with the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) with the backing of The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the London 2012 Inspire mark.

LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe, said: “This is a fantastic funding project that will deliver a real legacy from the London 2012 Games. It will provide a whole range of sporting opportunities for young people through improved facilities and will I hope inspire them to take up sport.”

The announcement was welcomed by the Local Government Association. Cllr Chris White, Chair of its Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: “In spite of budget pressures, councils are striving to keep supporting local sports clubs and want to work with them in creating a lasting and meaningful Olympic and Paralympic legacy. This much-needed funding will hopefully act as a catalyst to further strengthen local partnerships between councils and sports clubs and get more people playing sport.”

Inspired Facilities

Inspired Facilities is part of the Places People Play legacy programme. At least £52 million will be invested through Inspired Facilities. Responding to unprecedented demand, Sport England has made over £7 million of additional awards in the first round of investment decisions, taking the total to over £17 million^{^[1]}. There will be four more funding rounds as part of Inspired Facilities, with the second round opening on 1 February 2012.

At least £35 million of the funding will go to community and voluntary organisations, through grants of between £20,000 and £50,000. The remaining funding will be open to a wider group of organisations, including councils and schools, with grants of up to £150,000 available.

To make sure the technical elements of the application process don’t put off groups with good projects, Sport England has created a catalogue of typical facilities developments and improvements, based on what sports clubs have told us they need.

Sport England is focused on the delivery of a mass participation legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We invest National Lottery and Exchequer funding in

Chairman's Christmas Update

It’s now 4 months since the season finished and I feel it is time for another update on the state of play at the Club. The Club’s hardworking volunteers have certainly not shut up shop for the winter! There is much to update you all on so please take the time to read this update.

The End of Season Dinner held at Dr Challoner’s School was a hugely enjoyable evening and credit must go to Roy Rance, Anne Morgan, Penny Ayres, Mary White and Mark Gardiner for organising and facilitating such a great dinner. To get over 150 people all together for the occasion was no mean feat and is a sign of the strength of the Club even in adversity. I would like to again pass on the Club’s thanks to Graham Poll who was fantastic. The event raised around £3500 for the Club as well as being an enjoyable event all round.

We are indebted to Lizzie Allen, Mel McCarthy and Denis McCarthy who organised the hugely enjoyable Cabaret evening. Over 160 people attended and raised £3250 for the Pavilion fund. I would also like to thank Amersham and Chiltern RFC for allowing us to use their clubhouse for the event.

While there were some obvious disappointments on both the playing front and the arson attack on our clubhouse this year, to have fulfilled all our fixtures and sowed the seeds for a future Saturday 5^th XI in our successful link with our friends at Coleshill was something we should be proud of. The success of this joint venture is due to Stuart Watson.

The Saturday 1^st XI can count themselves unlucky not to be playing in Division 1 next year. They are a young side who will build on the achievements of this year. They won twelve of fifteen completed games, an impressive win percentage but unfortunately were pipped to the post by a good Wokingham side who I am sure will do well in Division 1 next season. I have no doubt we will be celebrating promotion next September if we play with the intensity the side showed at the end of the season. Ollie Turner has done an admirable job in his first year as 1^st XI captain as have all our captains across the club.

The most successful team in 2011 was our Women’s XI who won their league unbeaten. To see how the section has grown from being non-existent 5 years ago to being on the verge of running two sides is amazing and is testament to the hard work of Tina Turner, Hilary Browne, Peter Ongondo and Brendan O’Donovan as well as all who play, train or support the side. They are a credit to the club. The Saturday 2^nd XI had a testing year under captain Mo Asuaf with some fantastic performances beating the runaway league leaders, British Airways home and away whilst losing to our local rivals Amersham and Chenies twice each in our only defeats of the season. An upper mid table position was fair on the balance of the season.

The Saturday 3^rd XI were also tasting success at the end of the season, celebrating another promotion and the growth in playing standards from the reformation of the side in 2005 is beyond belief. The Saturday 4^th XI worked hard all season in James Misseldine’s first season at the helm, we have high hopes for next season here too.

We probably play more Sunday cricket than any other club in the county, easily fulfilling our fixtures for the 1^st and 2^nd XIs. The club’s youngsters have taken the lead with these sides with Ollie Turner and Chris Royals, both lifelong members of the club through the junior section, as captians.They have seen that Sunday cricket will continue to be an important part of the club as it declines at many others. It is great to see so many young people who are so committed to the club as well as the camaraderie and team spirit that will hold the club in good stead for many years to come. They are by no means alone either, our junior section continues to expand and the trend of recent years of winning the lion’s share of the county trophies on offer also continued. Thanks must go to all team managers as well as our team of coaches led by Aftab Habib, Peter Ongondo and Steve Ayres. My thanks go to Paul HD and his tireless team of age group managers and administrators.

Of course our on-field success must be met with off-field progress on the Pavilion rebuilding project as it is unsustainable in the long term to be reliant on portacabins. I am pleased to report that we have made significant progress since the end of the season. As a reminder, the capital project will be about £750,000 plus the cost of the retaining wall around the bank. The works we are undertaking between now and 31^st March 2012 are to try and bottom out risk, finalise the design to obtain detailed planning permission and to be able to tender the project with the intention of starting work in September 2012 or before if it doesn’t disrupt our ability to use the ground for league cricket.

I will split the Pavilion update into three parts;

· 1. Insurance

I am pleased to report that we have reached a satisfactory settlement with the insurance company. This will be an important building block in our attempt to raise the necessary funds for the new pavilion. My thanks go to Roy Rance at Chesham Insurance Brokers who has worked very hard behind the scenes in achieving this result and also to Mike Brogden at Merlin Claims Limited for his constructive approach. We hope to net about £190,000 - £200,000 against the new build.

· 2. Grant Fund Raising

The committee is made up of, Brendan O’Donovan, Christopher Royals, Rod Dowle and myself. I think special mention should go to Brendan who is doing an absolutely fantastic job. Without his expertise and hard work our fundraising efforts would be floundering. It is time consuming and we are being rewarded for his hard work by the grants we have been awarded.

We have since the end of the season been awarded two substantial grants for the rebuilding of the pavilion and two smaller but important grants towards replacing destroyed equipment. The equipment grants are from the ECB Equipment Grant(£5,000) andChiltern District Council for Equipment (£1,500). The first new building capital grant is also from the ECB Building Grant (£50,000) and the second is from Sport England Grant (£50,000). These are two key enabling grants that allow us to apply elsewhere with confidence.

The ECB Building Grant we have so far received is to pay our professional fees to architects, structural engineers and others involved in achieving the detailed planning permission on the pavilion, the mains drainage and the replacement of the burnt down storage sheds, preparing detailed tender documents. We will also hopefully be completing the site clearance so that access to the ground is easier than it was this season. This work needs to be completed by 31^st March 2012 under the terms of the ECB Building Grant.

Subject to planning, the Sport England Grant will be used to conduct preliminary work on the site with the intention of starting building at the end of the 2012 season. The intention is for some work to take place during the season, such as the installation of drainage for the football club and the new pavilion but this should not disrupt the cricket.

We have been given warm indications on a further £130,000 of grants but I will hold off on this until they have been awarded!! Fingers crossed please!!

· 3. Club fund raising

It is essential to show our commitment as club members towards the project and we have made progress on this season on this with a number of fund raising events and donations.

Events - We also need some volunteers from the club to step up to run some fundraising events. Our small network of the “usual suspects” to run such events are hopelessly overworked and we really need some people who may not be in official roles at the club to come up with ideas and see them through, however large or small they may be. Perhaps the most obvious step would be for someone to agree to run a bar at The Meadow after matches on a Saturday. This is both fundamental to the club and an easy source of profit. All help would be appreciated.

· Donations - We have had a number of donations and thank you to those who have generously donated. We do need donations and while we all know times are very tough, very simply the club will not be able to build a new pavilion without donations from club members. We can be very flexible with sponsorship opportunities and we can make the donations tax efficient with gift aid as well as giving some incentives for larger contributions. Please contact me directly to discuss as we have significant momentum at present and we really need to keep this moving forward for what will be a fantastic community facility.

U9, 10 & 11 Winter Nets

7 sessions have been booked at Chesham Prep School in the new year:- 7th, 21st, 28th February and 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th March. The first half of each session is for Under 9s and 10s (School years 4 and 5) and will run from 6:00 – 7:30 and the second session for Under 11s (School Year 6) will run from 7:30 – 9:00. We have 24 places available at each session and these places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. I recognise that we had many more than 48 players registered across these 3 ages last year but experience suggests not everyone takes up the offer of winter coaching.

There will be some use of the nets (although not all week, every week) and so some protective equipment will be required. As the club lost much of its stock in the fire I have very little available. Can I ask at the very least each player has access to a helmet, abdominal protector and a junior hard ball (all named please)? Chesham Women Start Indoor League with a Win

Chesham Women won their opening match in the indoor cricket league.

Chesham batted first and scored 186 for 7. Redbourn could not respond against the strong blowing from Clare, Sue and Anna and were restricted to 153-9. This earned Chesham a bonus point to their winning points.

Anna and Clare opened the batting partnership and put on 47 for the loss of only 1 wicket

Sue and Louise took over and the total reached about 200

Helen and Yolanda managed to lose 5 wickets between them and reduced the score to 186 - 7.

U10s Crowned County Champs

Chesham CC U10s completed a memorable first season in the Bucks Cricket Board’s county competition by winning the league play-off final against Cublington. Finishing top of their division and winning a semi-final against Buckingham left them scheduled to play Cublington during finals day at Stowe. This along with a couple of other attempts to play the game were thwarted by the weather but eventually a mid-September date was finalised. Chesham batted first and batted steadily all the way through and only losing 3 wickets was key in this pairs format meaning only 18 runs deducted from their score leaving them with 279. As always there was a key contribution from Player of the Year Dominic Goodman but in truth it was the responsible manner in which the whole team batted that laid the platform for victory. Cublington started steadily maintaining the required run rate but wickets either taken or not would be what would prove crucial. The wickets eventually started to tumble and this left the last pair from Cublington needing to score at 10 an over and with a slow outfield, tricky wicket and accurate bowling was never likely to happen. The winning margin was eventually 39 runs and the players celebrated a fantastic win. The Under 10 squad that played during the season was; Ollie Anderson, Max Biggs-Michaelides, Jack Clifford, Dylan Cohen, Zac Collingbourne, Siddhant Dey, Dominic Goodman, Ed Griffiths, Jonny Grint, Ben Hutchinson – Kurczij, Ollie McKinlay, Devan Owen, Matt Rutherford, Harry Spennewyn & William Turner,

After the game some individual awards were made to the players with Dominic Goodman picking up Player of the Year, Jack Clifford was Batsman, Will Turner bowler and Ollie McKinlay was all-rounder.

Weekend Summary

And so we reached the final weekend of the 2011 season...
On Saturday the match against Marlow Park was washed out without a ball being bowled, but the rain held off on Sunday and the all-day game against Paddington went ahead.
Chesham were inserted on a wet wicket and were indebted to David Hughes-D'aeth (61) who led the batting effort with help from Jack Gibbins and Jonathan Burden as Chesham declared on 166-8.
The old ball was taken and there were early breakthroughs for Mark Hughes-D'aeth and Chris Royals, but Paddington edged towards the target and despite a spread of wickets for Rod Dowle, Jack Gibbins and Jonathan Burden, Paddington sneaked home by two wickets deep into the final 20 overs.
All that is left for 2011 is the End of Season dinner on Friday, if you haven't got tickets yet there is still time, it should be a great night with the whole club. Stay tuned to the club's website over the winter as there will be fundraising events for the new pavilion as well as general news to keep you in touch with developments on and off field at The Meadow.

There were mixed emotions at The Meadow as the league season ended...

The 1st XI hammered Falkland but did not win promotion courtesy of losing the toss and being put in the field. At the same time Wokingham won the toss and batted, wrapping up 25 points later in the afternoon. This meant that despite a stellar performance, in which Peter Ongondo reached 50 League wickets with a 5 wicket haul and Andy Goddard guided the side home with 73*, there was nothing Chesham could do to deny Wokingham promotion. The side finished 4 points behind Wokingham.
The 2nd XI finished the season on a high as they recorded a victory over High Wycombe. Batting first, Mo Asuaf and Anthony Saunders' half centuries led Chesham to 215, before Wycombe were bowled out for 198. The side finished comfortably mid table, but will look to challenge at the top of the table next year.
The 3rd XI were celebrating promotion on Saturday night as they recorded an eventually comfortable win over already promoted Boyne Hill. Chesham were bowled out for an underpar 165, but four wickets apiece for Dave Porter and Chris Royals saw Boyne Hill dismissed for 98. The 3rds have now been promoted or won their league in three of the last four seasons, and will play in Division 5 next year.
The 4th XI very nearly recorded a creditable draw against a hugely strengthened High Wycombe side including ex-pros. Mark Hughes-D'aeth took 5 wickets as Wycombe declared on 225, but despite a valiant batting effort led by Paul Hughes-D'aeth and ben Marote the side were bowled out just 4 overs short of the draw.
No play was possible on Sunday which meant the Sunday 2nd XI stayed up.

Just one round of matches remains in the league season and it is going to go down to the wire...

The 1st XI got the better end of a draw against title rivals Wokingham. Batting first, Barney Atkins hit 55 and Tom Helm 43 before a collapse left Chesham on 179 all out. In reply, Chesham bowled superbly, Peter Ongondo and Matt Rance leading the attack, however the final breakthrough didn't quite come and Wokingham finished on 151-7. Chesham received 11 points for their efforts to Wokingham's 8, so Chesham top the league by one point.
The 2nd XI played out a tight draw with Windsor. Matt Yeabsley hit 45 as Chesham reached 172, and there were three wickets apiece for Chris Royals and Mo Asuaf as the match went to the last over. The final ball left Windsor needing 6 runs for victory and Chesham one wicket, neither was forthcoming and a draw was a fair result.
The 3rds were rained off against Hayes before a ball was boweld and there was no 4th XI match this weekend.
On Sunday, the 1st XI had the better side of an abandoned match against Gerrards Cross. Alex Morgan hit 102* and Jason Rance 45 as Chesham scored 225 off their 40 overs. Gerrards Cross' reply never looked like reaching the target, and when the rain came they were 151-7 off 31 overs with 3 wickets for Jack MacIver.
The 2nd XI put in a disapointing performance at Uxbridge. The side fell to 68-6 batting first before Steve Ayres (57*) and Chris Royals (31) recovered the innings to 173-9. However a poor bowling performance allowed Uxbridge to cruise home by 5 wickets.
On Bank Holiday Monday, the 1st XI comfortably defeated Cockfosters. Matt Rance hit a superb 127 as Chesham raced to 264, before Cockfosters were bowled out for 130 with the wickets spread around.

The State of Play
Three of Chesham's sides have it all to play for on the last day of the league season...
To guarantee promotion, the 1st XI must win batting first at Falkland. Any other result means that all will depend on how Wokingham perform at Kidmore End. If the sides finish level on points, it is highly probable Chesham will be promoted.
The situation is almost identical for the 3rd XI. Their one point lead over Royal Ascot means that a win batting first will guarantee promotion, while any other result will leave the promotion spot open to both Royal Ascot and Tring.
The Sunday 2nd XI must win to stay in Division 6. A loss will leave the side at the mercy of other results and net run rate.

The Club's end of season dinner is on Friday 16th September at Dr Challoners Grammar School. Tickets are £17.50 a head.
There are two end of season friendlies the week following the end of the league season. On Saturday there is a match away at Marlow Park, 1pm start and on Sunday there is our traditional end of season all day game versus Paddington at The Meadow, 11am start. The 1sts were rained off early in their match away at Sonning - getting just 7 points for their troubles, while down the road Wokingham got in a full match and won batting first - 25 points. This means that Wokingham have leapfrogged into 1st place by two points, setting up a league deciding match against them this Saturday at The Meadow, the match starts at 12:30, get down there to support the side in a crucial match.
The 2nds got in just 6 overs before the rain came against OMTs, and the 4th XI's match was similarly shortened. However, the 3rds waited through the rain to defeat Chalfont St Peter and move into the promotion positions. Tanvir Butt took 5-48 as Chalfont were bowled out for 131, before Tanvir Butt (42), John Franks (39) and Rohith Shylendra (31*) saw the side home for the loss of 5 wickets.

The weather was better on Sunday however as both teams got in their matches. The 1sts hammered Edmonton, Andy Goddard hitting a century and Matt Rance 52 as Chesham racked up 250, before Matt Rance took 5 wickets as Edmonton were bowled out for 140.
The 2nds suffered an agonising loss to West Herts in the last over. Henry Morris (51) and Steve Ayres (43*) led the side with the bat on a tough wicket as the side reached 158, but despite 4 wickets for Chris Royals West Herts got home by two wickets with two balls to spare.
